OVERVIEW
In the words of Brian Jackman
“Africa changes you forever, like nowhere on earth. Once you have been there, you will never be the same. But how do you begin to describe its magic to someone who has never felt it?"
Who will enjoy this tour ~ Travellers who want to experience a safari and all that magic it offers
Day 1 – 4: Luxury Lodge
Fly into Hoedspruit you take a short road transfer to enter into a private reserve. The moment you pass through the gates, it becomes real, you are on Safari.
For three nights you can enjoy luxury accommodation at its finest. Your home for the next few days offers private decks with views out to the bush, en suite guest rooms with large outdoor showers and baths by candlelight. A pool to cool down in and shady trees for that afternoon snooze. Great food that surprises you, one night it could be a BBQ in the bush, the next a seafood platter served in the main lodge – the Chefs on safari are creative and one thing for sure, always do something special for their guests.
A day in the bush is all about waking up early with the anticipation and the excitement reaching in, as you make your way to your first cup of coffee. Clambering up the trusty 4x4 vehicle, with your seat prepacked with a hot water bottle and blanket in winter, or icy cold water bottles and a rain poncho in summer and then heading out as the sun starts to rise, is a magical experience. The African bush is slowly revealed to you and the sounds of the bush come alive. Morning game drives are all about tracking what has gone on the night before, did the lions make a kill, has the buffalo herd moved on, did the hyenas manage to pull down the carcass that was left hanging in the tree. It is real and it is playing out in front of you.
Returning to the lodge, there is always a hot breakfast waiting, along with home-made Danishes and breads, fresh fruit and yogurt all served along-side espressos, cappuccinos and pots of tea. The next couple of hours are for relaxing, whether you laze by the pool with a G&T, or find a shady spot to read, or catch up on some sleep in the cool of your suite – you are on African time.
Lunch blends into afternoon high tea and more treats abound, served with that chilled Sauvignon blanc and fine English china.
Then it is time to grab your binoculars and head to the 4x4 vehicle for the late afternoon game drive. It is difficult to say which one enjoys more, the morning of evening safari – as both offers something special. As the sun sets, you might catch a glimpse of the pride setting out on a hunt, or the rhinos chilling out in a mud bath, or the eagles circling above – you never know what you will come across. The safari drives are on sand tracks and go through ravines and rivers, dry or flowing and you hold on and just watch the bush.
A highlight is stopping as the sun dips down for drinks and canapės, Only in Africa, can you sip on an ice cold beer, or a chilled spritzer as you stand under the shade of a thorn tree watching a herd of zebras pass you by.
Back at the lodge, dinner is served outdoors in the boma around the campfire. Stories are shared by other guests while the Chef prepares a feast that makes your mouth water. The stars come out to play with the Milky-way shining bright and the Southern Cross trying to out do the Three Sisters. All this and still a wine cellar that holds the best of South African wines to be served along with a three-course dinner.
Turning in for the evening is another adventure. Having a nightcap on your own private deck as the day draws to an end, nodding off to sleep in your large oversized bed and then you hear it.
Was it a call of a hyena close by on the prowl, or the distant deep bellow of a lion, that woke you up…
“I never knew a morning in Africa when I woke up, that I was not happy.” Ernest Hemmingway
