The Zulu Wars, Bush and Beach ~ 8 Nights / 9 DaysENQUIRE NOW
OVERVIEW
Start your adventure off with a few days in Umhlanga overlooking the Indian Ocean, before going on safari to an exclusive game lodge, thereafter, a special three night’s stay at Fugitives Drift.
The Zulu War of 1879 is famous throughout the English-speaking world for the great battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. The spectacular Fugitives’ Drift property, a 5000 acre Natural Heritage Site, overlooks both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, and includes the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives attempting to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment.
If one tried to dream up geography and topography for the clash between two great nations, one could hardly come up with a more fantastic scene than this one.
Who will enjoy this tour ~ This is a wonderful tour if you have an interest in history and enjoy listening to ‘story-tellers’ that will move you to tears. If you want to forget the hustle and bustle and spend quality beach time, quiet reflection in the bush and walk battle-fields that today are so peaceful, consider this tour ~ it is a personal favourite of Qui Vado’s owner.
Day 1 – 2: Deluxe 5*Beach Hotel
Touch down in the Zulu Kingdom and be transferred to your luxury hotel in Umhlanga, 20 minutes north of Durban. Spend your first day at leisure enjoying the views over the Indian Ocean from your room, or taking a stroll along the promenade. For dinner our guests have a choice of dining in a superb Indian restaurant, or if spicy is not for you, the option of a quality South African steakhouse is available. (B)
Day two includes a half day private tour along the Golden Mile, a visit to the neo-Baroque City hall and Indian market. Durban is known to have the largest concentration of Hindus in Africa after Mauritius. Time is allowed at the market for trying exotic spices, purchasing colourful sarees and tasting a ‘bunny chow’ ~ a flavourful spicy curry served in chunky fresh bread….
The afternoon is at leisure to take in a Spa treatment, or relax by the pool or better still dip your toes in the warm Indian Ocean (B + D)
Day 3 - 5: Luxury 5*Game Lodge
After breakfast your driver will be waiting to transfer you to your African safari in a malaria free area. This luxury game lodge is approximately 3 hours away by road, where you will spend three glorious nights in a Leading Hotels of the World luxury lodge.
A truly African experience goes beyond the five senses. It’s felt. An early morning or late afternoon safari is the best way to absorb the sights, smells and sounds of Africa. Encounter the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo): the animals that inspire a long-lasting connection with the continent. And, once you’ve found them, go looking for Africa’s other famous five – the Little Five (elephant shrew, rhino beetle, leopard tortoise, ant lion and buffalo weaver).
Expert guides and trackers show you the circle of life, and how it spins both slowly and frenetically in the African bush. They will offer you wildlife lessons from their own cultures and knowledge. They will tell stories and share anecdotes. They will explain, inform, educate and then sit back and let you fall in love with the wild in your own way.
With 14 000 hectares to explore, you’ll see diverse wildlife including cheetah, hyena, warthog and the occasional wild dog, as well as abundant bird and plant life. What is more, it’s all yours to enjoy, this private game reserve with dedicated staff members are the only people you’ll encounter on the roads while you’re here.
Day 6 - 8: Superior 4*Lodge
Three nights are spent on a spectacular property ~ a 5000 acre Natural Heritage Site, overlooking both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, and includes the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives attempting to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment. The Zulu War of 1879 is famous throughout the English-speaking world for the great battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.
Thought-provoking and often emotionally charged tours are conducted by registered tour guides, who are superb storytellers and make the history of that day come alive. Learn of the bravery and mobility of the Zulu army that defeated the British Army at the Battle of Isandlwana and listen to the famous story of Rorke’s Drift, a British victory which saw the award of more Victoria Crosses than in any other battle in history.
Day One ~ Isandlwana: Hear in gripping detail the background to the Anglo-Zulu War as narrated by David Rattray on the Day of the Dead Moon as you are driven to Isandlwana in the early morning. Sit on the battlefield, mesmerised by the remarkable story of this fantastic Zulu victory.
Day Two ~ Rorke’s Drift: Listen at sunset to the famous story of Rorke’s Drift, where 139 British soldiers were attacked by 4,000 Zulu warriors. More VCs were awarded for valour in this battle than in any other battle in history. There never was another day like this one…….
Absorbing the loss of lives for both the Zulus and the British is heart wrenching and contemplation is best spent overlooking the plains from the Harford Library.
Henry “Charlie” Harford
Charlie Harford was David Rattray’s favourite personality in his tales of the Anglo-Zulu War. He referred to him as “our beloved beetle-collector”. Harford, born in 1852, emigrated to Pinetown, Natal, with his father in 1864. He went back to England in 1870 to join the 99th Regiment of Foot then returned to Natal in 1878, becoming, thanks to his fluency in Zulu, Staff Officer to Commandant Lonsdale of the Natal Native Contingent. Harford’s particular appeal to David was his keen interest in entomology – the subject of David’s degree – and he is probably best remembered for stopping the skirmish at Sihayo’s Stronghold in order to retrieve a rare beetle and pickle it in gin.
Day 10:
After breakfast, a Driver will be waiting to transfer for to King Shaka Airport, (Durban).
